The Latest Technology in Automobiles
We’re living in the age of artificial intelligence, and the latest technology in automobiles is no exception. From Human-machine interfaces to Augmented reality to Driver override systems, today’s cars are equipped with cutting-edge technology. But what’s next? Let’s take a closer look at some of the more intriguing developments for the future.
Human-machine interface
The latest technology in automobiles is the human-machine interface, or HMI. It enables human interaction with the computer, which has a wide range of uses. It can include visual and acoustic interfaces, and can take many forms, including voice control systems, instrument clusters, head-up displays, and multi-function switches. It also can include rear-seat entertainment displays. The automotive HMI market is segmented by technology type and access type. The Multi-Modal HMI system segment is expected to grow the fastest, owing to rising demand for connected vehicles and enriched safety features.
While traditional HMIs rely on switches and dials, the latest technology also features voice control. This type of interface is gaining popularity as self-driving cars become a reality. Automakers are adopting various types of HMIs to improve the driving experience. Many users prefer voice control, which allows hands-free operation without distracting the driver. Other types of HMI include multi-information displays and touchscreens.
Augmented reality
Augmented reality is one of the hottest trends in the automobile industry, and it will soon find its way into the windscreens of cars. Using computer vision, AR applications will be able to recognize features of the cabin, and can even create an AR owner’s manual. A connected car will be able to recognize available parking spaces, and show the driver how to park their vehicle without having to look out the window.
The first automotive AR HUD was installed in a Mercedes A-Class in 2018, and since then, many other automakers have adopted the technology. It is estimated that the market for automotive-grade AR will reach $4.6 billion by 2025.
Driver override systems
The driver override systems are part of the collision avoidance system in automobiles. The system prevents an accelerating vehicle while the driver applies the brakes, saving lives in the process. This technology has been available for several years, but only recently has it become common in cars. As the number of road accidents continues to rise, automakers have incorporated it into many vehicles.
This technology is available on some new cars, but it’s not mandatory. President Barack Obama’s administration first recommended the systems for new vehicles, but didn’t mandate them. The recommendation came in response to a massive Toyota recall.
